3 ms diaries covering his service as an officer with the 18th KGO Lancers, Indian Army in France (1914 - 1918) and Palestine and Syria (1918), with a few personal observations about military engagements such as the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (March 1915) but mainly describing his movements across the Western Front, with references to the German use of poison gas which he considered "unsporting", the disparity between Territorial and Regular soldiers, the value of mounted troops, and the difference between fighting the Turks and the Germans. Together with 2 ms letters (2pp and 6pp) from his brother, Lieutenant J P Dening of the 21st Prince Albert Victor's Own Cavalry in Mesopotamia (March and June 1917); cyclostyled ts narratives of operations (total 104pp) for the 4th, 5th, 10th and 12th Cavalry Divisions in Palestine and Syria (September 1916 - October 1918); a folder of undated ts lecture notes on Squadron Leading (2pp), Cavalry Outposts at Night (4pp), Mobile Troops (33pp) and the History of India in 1946 (10pp); and other miscellaneous notes and memoranda.
