F A Winsor, born Friedrich Albrecht Winzler in Moravia, came to London in 1803 to exploit his ideas for the provision of public and domestic lighting from gas. He was not however a businessman, and it was only with the support of an able group of backers that in 1810 a private act was secured which led in 1812 to the formation of the Chartered Gas Light and Coke COmpany (for whose records see B/GLCC) |
