Papers relating to a Chancery suit brought by Lionel Wake, merchant of Antwerp in the Duchy of Brabant, against Sir William Calley of Burderop House in respect of a long outstanding balance claimed by Wake on four bills of exchange dated 24 April 1610, amounting to 58103 ducketts, underwritten by the Spanish Treasury and owned successively by Calley's grandfather and father, [Sir] William Calley the elder and William Calley the younger, as monies arising out of [Sir] William Calley the elder's cloth business dealings in the Spanish Netherlands.

 

Included, correspondence and accounts dating mainly from 1606, when [Sir] William Calley the elder's business interests in the Netherlands were managed by a factor, Gabriel Colford of Brussels, and covering his business activities in both Spain and the Netherlands in some detail.

 

Some of the papers are in Spanish, and a few in Dutch.
