Title: | SANDWICH BOROUGH |
Description: |
General Introduction In the generally fine records of the Cinque Port and Borough of Sandwich three classes stand out for cataloguer as well as student - the Custumals, Year Books and Treasurers' accounts. Although the original custumal does not survive, extant versions do present a picture of the town and town life in the late 13th and the 14th centuries at the important time of its initial independence. The loss of virtually all the town records for the 14th and early 15th centuries can probably be attributed to the sack of the town by the French in 1457; it is significant that in the middle of the 16th century there was no earlier Year Book surviving than the present first volume. This begins in 1431 and probably owes its survival to the fact that it was in current use at the time of the attack. From 1431, however, the series is unbroken and together with the Treasurers' records which virtually begin after the attack, but which unfortunately are incomplete, forms the basis both of the Sandwich records and for any historical study of the borough. Most of the other series of Administrative, Financial and Judicial records either derive from these twin sources or may be supplemented by a reference back to them One striking omission, which can only partially be accounted for, is the lack of loose administrative papers and correspondence. The only surviving papers have been bound at some date into three portfolios [Sa/ZB/1-3] following an arrangement which dates back at least into the 18th century as each has an index by Boys in the order in which they are bound Sa/ZB/1 is miscellaneous both in character and chronological arrangement; it contains a number of letters of process of withernam but only 1/49-69, letters and reports of proceedings in Parliament sent back by her Barons in Parliament, 1679, form an original series Sa/ZB/2 has a definitely sounder chronological arrangement and unity of subject in that the majority concern correspondence with the Lord Warden and his officers and the transmission of orders by them [from 1559] Sa/ZB/3 is again very miscellaneous in character and lacks even chronological arrangement, but it does contain a lengthy register of some 100 pages of letters and writs received from the Lord Warden or his Lieutenant, 1555-9 [ZB/3/59-62] Most sections of the catalogue contain separate introductory notes on the background of the particular function and the scope of its records as well as reference to associated records in other sections Finally a reference must be made to the section of this catalogue, Sa/ZT, which contains the transcript material of William Boys, Alderman Jacobs and of the research workers from 1932. The value of Boys both to the cataloguer and historian cannot be overestimated and transcripts of many of the surviving medieval documents may be found in his Collections and due acknowledgment has been made to it as a source for the history of the parishes, hospitals and other institutions in the towns. The value of the '1932' collection lies in its accumulation of source material both within and without Sandwich In addition to the purely Borough records, this catalogue also contains some turnpike records [T 11] and the Borough Quarter Sessions records [Sa/JQ transferred by an order under the Justices of the Peace Act, 1949 Immediately after this introductory note is an index giving the K.A.O. references and the references, by shelves, presses, etc., assigned by Miss Scroggs on her card index.
