Immediate source of acquisition:

After Edgar Osborne's death in 1978, his second wife returned to her native Sweden with his papers where they remained until 1999 when she donated them to the Record Office.

Administrative / biographical background:

Edgar Osborne was born in Bournemouth, Hampshire. He served on the Bulgarian Front and in Palestine in World War I. After the war, he resumed his career in librarianship and became County Librarian of Derbyshire at the age of 33. He was to hold this post for 31 years, during which he introduced new services, such as mobile libraries, and developed his own interests in literature, especially in children's books.
