Papers of John Conrad Waterlow relate to his employment as Chair of Human Nutrition and Head of the Department of Nutrition, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 1970-1982. They consist mostly of correspondence (in-letters and copies of out-letters) and other papers relating to: work undertaken during his time as the head of the Department of Nutrition at LSHTM, as well as consultancy work for external organisations (1969-1989); reviews, revisions and comments on papers and proposals (1988-2003); Waterlow's involvement in the 13th International Conference on Nutrition (1985); the history and development of the department and its staff, including papers relating to the establishment of the Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Unit (1968-1970), and the appointment of a new Chair of Human Nutrition (1990-1993); the work of ex-students (1979-1999).

Administrative / biographical background:

Professor John Waterlow, C.B.E., was born in London on 13 June 1916, and studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and London Hospital Medical College, graduating BChir, MD, ScD. He became a member of the Scientific Staff of the Medical Research Council (MRC) in 1942, working for their Human Nutrition Research Unit, and was Director of the MRC Tropical Metabolism Research Unit at the University of the West Indies 1954-1970.
He returned to the UK in 1970, and appears to have worked for a short time at the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit at St Mary's Hospital Paddington, before being appointed to the Chair of Human Nutrition at LSHTM, which he held until 1982, after which he became Emeritus Professor. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) the same year. He also became a Foreign Associate, U.S National Academy of Sciences in 1989. Waterlow was awarded the Murgatroyd Prize for Tropical Medicine, the Bristol-Myers Prize for Nutrition (1985), and the Rank Prize Fund Prize for contributions to nutrition.

Publications include: Protein-Energy Malnutrition (1992); Protein Turnover in Mammalian Tissues and in Whole Body (1978); Diet and Disease in traditional and developing societies (1990); as well as many papers and reviews on malnutrition and protein metabolism.

Professor Waterlow died on 19 October 2010.
