The company was established in 1866 as Wordsworth & Maskell. The works in Hanover Avenue were built in 1888, when the firm was known as Wordsworth & Co. It became Wood Wordsworth & Co. in 1920 and now incorporates the three businesses of Abbott & Smith, Andrews & Co. (of Bradford) and T.E.Hughes.
