Administrative / biographical background:

Francis Cunningham Scott was born in Madras, India in 1834, to parents Carteret George Scott of Malleny (1803 – 1875) and Emily Coffin. Carteret George Scott was a Captain in the Madras Army.
Scott was commissioned into the 42nd Regiment on 24 Nov 1852, progressing through the ranks as he served in the Crimean War and in India:
Lieutenant 18 Aug 1854
Captain 6 Sep 1855
Major 26 Mar 1868

On 17 Mar 1859, Scott married Mary Olivia Ward in Calcutta, India. They had four children.
Scott took part in the First Ashanti Expedition in 1874 and for his service was mentioned in Dispatches. He was also appointed a Commander of the Order of the Bath (CB) and received a brevet promotion to Lieutenant Colonel on 1 Apr 1874.
In 1895-96 Scott was a senior commanding officer during the Second Ashanti Expedition. Scott received an honorary appointment as Major-General on 25 Mar 1896 and was also promoted to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) on 31 Mar 1896.
Scott died in London on 26 Jun 1902, aged 68.
