BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

 

Henry Pilling [MBE] was born Bolton, 1867, the son of William Pilling, Millwright. He was apprenticed to John Wood and John Musgrave and married Sara Gerrard at Bolton in 1894. In 1896 the family moved to Chorlton and Pilling worked with the National Boiler and General Insurance Company of Manchester. By 1909 Pilling was working for Galloways and he was registered as an Engine and Boiler Works manager in 1915.

 

In 1916 Pilling was elected to the Executive Committee of the Manchester & District Engineer Employers Federation and in 1918 he was promoted General Manager at Galloways. Pilling was the President of the Manchester Association of Engineers and in 1928 he was elected President of the MDEEA/F.

 

He died in a nursing home in 1931 and the Galloway Company went into receivership in 1932.
