The papers of William Aldam of Frickley Hall and his parents William and Sarah, are currently being recatalogued. The existing catalogue will be gradually superseded by this revised catalogue. Please consult this catalogue first, as records formerly contained in the old catalogue will be progressively transferred to this one, which contains the current document references where these have been revised.

Administrative / biographical background:

William Aldam (1813-1890) acquired the Frickley estate as a wedding gift from his father in 1844. The Aldam surname was adopted as a result of inheritance and the family, originally a branch of the Quaker Pease dynasty, had gained its wealth through the Leeds woollen trade. The archive includes the records of the family firm. William Aldam gained a first class degree in mathematics at Cambridge and was called to the bar. He served as one of the MPs for Leeds between 1841 and 1847 and thereafter combined landownership and improvement, a wide range of business interests (including chairmanship of the Aire and Calder Navigation Co), a prominent position in the West Riding magistracy and other local government bodies and participation in a wide range of charitable societies.
