Date: 1903 - 1985
History: Lewis Olsover was born in Gateshead in 1903 into an orthodox Jewish family of Polish extraction. He took a degree in Economics at Kings College, Newcastle, while also running his wholesale drapers business. He soon developed a lasting research interest in the religious and social position of Jews in North East England, and wrote extensively on the history of the various Jewish Communities in the area. With his historical research interests, it is perhaps not surprising that he took a prominent role in the location and preservation of Jewish archives in the North East. He died in 1985.
