History: Elder daughter of Albert, Duke of York (later George VI); born 21 April 1926. Became heir to the throne unexpectedly in December 1936 as a result of the abdication of her father's elder brother, Edward VIII. Married 20 November 1947 to her third cousin Prince Philip (Mountbatten), son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark (made Duke of Edinburgh on marriage). Succeeded to the throne on the death of her father on 6 February 1952 (while she was in Kenya during tour of Africa). Crowned 2 June 1953.
