History: Sir Thomas Overbury was a courtier and author. He formed an intimate friendship with Robert Carr, a favourite of James I, and acted as Carr's adviser. Following the attainder and execution of Robert Winter, one of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators, Overbury was given the lease of his saltworks in Worcestershire. Carr was knighted in 1607 and Overbury in 1608. When Overbury opposed Carr's (now Viscount Rochester) marriage to Lady Essex he was thrown in the Tower, where he was slowly poisoned by agents of Lady Essex, four of whom were hanged in 1615.
