History: Army officer: fought at Blenheim 1704; brigadier general 1719, major general 1735, lieutenant general 1739, general 1745; fought at Blenheim and Dettingen; left in command in the low countries when Cumberland and most British troops withdrawn to meet the Jacobite threat. Succeeded as 2nd earl, 1710.
