History: Page to James, Duke of York. Served in Holland, Flanders and Scotland. Instrumental in crushing Monmouth's rebellion, 1685. Defected to the Prince of Orange, 1688. Accompanied him as William III to Flanders, 1691. Captain General, 1702-1711. Created Duke of Marlborough, 1702. Frequently in concert with Prince Eugene of Savoy, achieved the victories of Blenheim 1704, Ramillies 1706, Oudenaarde 1708, Malplaquet 1709 and numerous sieges. Politically defeated and dismissed from all his offices, 1711, which were restored by George I.
