History: Naval commander; Treasurer and comptroller of the Navy; introduced many improvements in ship construction for the Navy; 1588 member of Council at War at Plymouth during fight with The Armada. Later service included 1588 Gravelines, France; 1590 (with Sir Martin Frobisher) led expedition to Portuguese coast; 1595 died at sea off Puerto Rico while serving in Drake’s expedition to West Indies. Knighted in 1588 after action off Isle of Wight.
