History: | One of Sir Alfred David McAlpine's major passions was cricket, and in 1913 he bought Marchwiel Hall in Marchwiel, Denbighshire, North Wales, for the purpose of playing cricket matches there. As a consequence the A D McAlpine XI was formed. They primarily played friendly matches against minor counties in the North West and in Denbighshire. When McAlpine died in 1944, his son Jimmie took over the company and continued his father's tradition of playing matches, and the team, now known as the A J McAlpine XI even went on tour to South Africa in 1969, 1982 and 1984, Rhodesia in 1969 and 1982, Swaziland in 1984. |
