The summary includes a brief description of the collection(s) (usually including the covering dates of the collection), the name of the archive where they are held, and reference information to help you find the collection.

Alternative name(s):
  • Furness Fells (Manor)
Date: 1510-1938
History:

Descent of manor

After the partition made between the monks of Furness and William de Lancaster in 1160, Hawkshead was held by Furness Abbey until the Dissolution, and by the Crown until 1666. It was then granted, with the liberty of Furness, to the Duke of Albemarle. The manor descended to the Dukes of Buccleuch who held it into the 20th century.

Geographical extent

Although the monks were lords of the whole of Furness, the parishes of Dalton, Hawkshead and Colton were the only portions directly administered by them. The upland part of the lordship was administered from Hawkshead.

Nature of jurisdiction

Courts were still held in the early 20th century.
