Sir Lawrence Dundas, 1st baronet (d. 1781), a younger son of Thomas Dundas of Fingask (Perthshire) was Commissary-General and contractor to the army, 1748-59, and made extensive purchases of land. By 1770 he had acquired estates in the North Riding of Yorkshire (Aske, near Richmond, and Marske, in Cleveland) from the Darcy and Lowther families respectively, the Hope estate (Kerse etc.) in Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire, the Ballinbreich (Fife) lands of the Earls of Rothes, and the Orkney and Shetland estates of the Earls of Morton (see Douglas, Earls of Morton).
