Date: 1855-1972
History: The Lower Division was established by Act of Parliament in 1844; prior to this date there were four coroners covering the county but no defined districts, although the Quarter Sessions paid travel expenses and this tended to limit each coroner to a certain area. The Lower Division covered the south of the county from Slimbridge, Coaley, Nympsfield and Kingswood (near Wotton-under-Edge) down to Bristol. Following a review of Coroner's districts in 1966 it was renamed the Lower/Avon Division, but retained the same boundaries. Maps showing the areas of the various divisions can be found in the published 'Handlist to the Contents of Gloucestershire Record Office', available in the public searchroom at Gloucestershire Archives, and at The National Archives.

Genealogy: The earlier sequence of inquest files for this district commences in May 1855 when William Gaisford was Deputy Coroner. He became Coroner in July 1855. William Gaisford appointed W. Scott as Deputy Coroner during the period 1872-74 and thereafter the filing of inquests, correspondence and notices of death is more haphazard.
