Files of the Education Department and Board of Education, Welsh Department concerning matters of general education common to, or not peculiar to, elementary and secondary education in Wales.
The series includes papers of the committee on Intermediate and Higher Education - Wales 1880-1882 and memorials seeking the establishment of a university college in Wales; the setting up of a Joint Education Committee for Wales and Monmouthshire; HM Inspectors' reports on the provision of elementary, secondary and further education by the responsible authorities in Wales; the contribution for Wales to the Board of Education's Annual Report for some years, and the appointment of a departmental committee to inquire into the position occupied by Welsh (language and literature) in the educational system of Wales.
Prior to 1921 the files were in an unnumbered series but subsequently a numbered series was introduced which absorbed cognate papers from the earlier series.
The "Unnumbered" and "Numbered" files are arranged alphabetically under subject headings to form groups of the periods 1880-1911 and 1912-1935
