Formal Investigation into the Clapham Junction Railway Accident: Evidence, Papers and Report
This series consists of preliminary hearings, transcripts of public hearings, statements from organizations and individuals and exhibits relating to the investigation into the Clapham Junction railway accident on 12 December 1988. These records contain evidence and statements from doctors and medical staff, ambulance crews, the police, the fire brigade, train passengers and various other sources.

On Monday 12 December 1988 an accident near Clapham Junction involving three trains resulted in the deaths of 35 people and injuries to many more. The following day the Secretary of State for Transport appointed Mr A Hidden QC to hold a formal investigation into the causes and all circumstances attending the accident, under s 7 of the Railways Act 1871.
The investigation opened at a preliminary hearing in London on 10 January 1989, with formal hearings beginning on 20 February 1989. In all the investigation lasted 57 days.
The following attended, were represented or provided evidence at the investigation: Treasury Solicitors, Association of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, bereaved and injured, British Railways Board, Central Transport Consultative Committee, London Regional Passengers Committee, London Fire and Civil Defence Authority, ML Holdings PLC, National Union of Railwaymen, and Transport salaried staff.
