Administrative / biographical background: |
The Ministry of Health Act 1919 established the Ministry of Health and from July 1919 it assumed the powers and duties of the Local Government Board. In January 1951 the Ministry of Local Government and Planning was formed by the merger of the Ministry of Town and Country Planning and the local government and environmental health divisions of the Ministry of Health. The title of this department was changed to Ministry of Housing and Local Government in November 1951. From May 1940 the Welsh Office took over responsibility for a number of functions carried out by local authorities in Wales. |
