This series contains subject indexes compiled annually. As the new filing and indexing system was introduced in stages during 1920, the card index of 1919 covers a mass of papers received in 1920. From 1920 to 1951 the index is in the form of printed volumes. From 1952 the index is in the form of volumes produced by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office but not printed. So far, these non printed indexes are available for 1952, 1953 and 1959. The series also includes indexes to green papers, originally classified as confidential or secret, but now in their normal place in the General Correspondence. Also included are references to papers that have not been selected for permanent preservation.
