Administrative / biographical background:

The Inspectorate Tripartite Committee was set up in 1950 by HM Inspectorate. The committee consisted of a chairman, (staff inspector for libraries), a secretary and one other member from the Inspectorate and three other members from the Library Association and the School Library Association.

The Committee's terms of reference were "to consider questions of joint concern in the educational field, relating to school library provision and library services for young people in general". The committee discussed various topics including the setting up of school libraries, relationships with public libraries, book production and the training of school librarians.

The committee met until 1962, but was never formally dissolved. In 1967 an attempt was made to revive the committee to act as a steering group for an exercise on co-operation between the Public Libraries Services and School Libraries. The committee was never reconvened after May 1968.
