Catalogue description RENTALS OF RECEIVERS GENERAL

Rentals of the receivers general of Crown lands kept by the auditors in order to set the receivers' charge and audit their accounts. They relate to the groups of counties held by receivers general, which were usually different to the auditors' circuits, and mainly date from 1817 to 1831, although there are rentals from 1783 for northern England and from 1736 for Wales.

The rentals give detailed information of the disposition of the Crown estate at this time including the nature of property and names of lessees and usually include a copy of the account of the Receiver General with (from 1810) the Commissioners of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues.

Some arrears were accounted for by particular receivers and separate rentals are therefore found. These include the Bailiwick of St James, Westminster (LR 312 and 313), the lands of Savoy hospital, Middlesex (LR 2/314) and the lands held by the New [Regent] Street commissioners (LR 311 and 313).
