Title: QUEEN CATHERINE'S JOINTURE
Description:

Queen Catherine of Braganza's jointure and other assigned Crown lands. This sub-series holds important material relating to the jointure of Queen Catherine of Braganza, the consort of Charles II. Lands were assigned to trustees, to hold for the queen, by letters patent and indenture and a series of enrolments of these grants (lettered 'B' to 'E') is included. There are other sub sub-series for the minute books of the Queen's Council, entry books of leases, warrants and contracts; and rentals of jointure lands.

Date: 1660-1707
Administrative / biographical background:

Queen Catherine's jointure included lands of the Duchy of Lancaster as well as those administered by the Exchequer. The trustees to whom the lands were assigned were also the main officers appointed by the queen to administer her lands. These officers, on the model of the Duchy of Lancaster, when sitting together constituted her council. On the death of the Queen's consort, the documents relating to the lands held in jointure were to be delivered into the Exchequer and hence into the records of the auditors of land revenue. This is clearly shown by a schedule of documents ordered to be so delivered in 1711 in LR 2/135.
