Title: The Crown Estate Commissioners and predecessors: Registered Files on Estates Remaining in Crown Possession after 1940
Description:

These files contains reports from, and instructions to, receivers and surveyors, together with general correspondence and minutes relating to lettings, sales, purchases, easements, repairs and improvements to buildings, boundaries, roads, and all aspects of estate management of the various Crown properties, both urban and agricultural, from time to time under the charge of The Crown Estate commissioners and predecessors.

There are also some papers relating to the Crichel Down Inquiry, 1953 to 1954. CRES 35/2614 to 2623 and 4075 to 4182 contain papers relating to railways on Crown estate land.

Apart from a few individual small estates and properties, the files relate to estates still in the possession of the Crown at the beginning of 1941. Most pieces contain maps or plans.

It should be noted however that the Tintern Estate in Monmouthshire is included amongst the English counties, and that apart from these Tintern files there are only two files for Wales (CRES 35/1771 and 1772).

For information on the appraisal and selection decisions applied to records in this series, see Operational Selection Policy OSP 2, The Crown Estate, 1979-1985.
