Administrative / biographical background:

Britain captured Minorca from Spain in 1708 and the island was formally ceded by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Possession of Minorca exchanged hands several times between Britain, France and Spain in the eighteenth century before being recoccupied by Britain in 1798. The island returned to Spanish rule following the Treaty of Amiens in 1802.
