In the earlier period (1831-1844) some volumes devoted to correspondence from the South Australian Association, the South Australian Commissioners, and the Land Board. Each volume with a contents list, or a précis of each letter giving name of correspondent, date of letter and subject matter.

Administrative / biographical background:

South Australia became a colony in 1836 under a charter granted to the South Australian Association. In 1841 the charter was suspended and South Australia became a crown colony. In 1901 it became an original state of the new Commonwealth of Australia.
