Administrative / biographical background:

The Adult Learning Inspectorate was set up under the provisions of the Learning and Skills Act 2000, and began work in April 2001. Its remit was to promote high quality in the provision of adult and lifelong learning. It has responsibility for the inspection of further education, which is funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) or a local education authority; training provided wholly or partly on employers' premises; and training funded through the Employment Service, including New Deals initiatives.

In 2002 its remit was extended to cover the inspection of learning within prisons; vocational provision overseas in support of the British Council and area, and the provision of thematic or survey reports as required.
