The Countryside Council for Wales was set up in 1991 following the re-organisation of the Nature Conservancy Council. At the same time, the Welsh responsibilities of the Countryside Commission passed to the new Countryside Council.

The Countryside Council has responsibility for all matters relating to the conservation of the Welsh countryside and its flora and fauna. It carries out research on the location and numbers of animals at risk. It also has responsibility for designating and monitoring sites of special scientific interest.
