Administrative / biographical background:

Establishment and staffing matters formed part of the remit of three sections, all of which used the ETG series from 1967. Prison Department P1 was responsible for planning, finance, secretarial services, publicity and public relations. Prison Department P7 was responsible for prison building projects and the provision of staff quarters. Home Office Establishment Division 3 was responsible for the non-industrial staff of prisons. In 1980 these functions were combined into the Directorate of Personnel and Finance and a new files series (DPG) was created.
