London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games: Singapore Bid Records
This series comprises records collected by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) relating to the original bid which was presented in July 2005 in Singapore.
The contributors to the records will pre-date the creation of LOCOG in 2005 in some files. For example, London 2012 Limited was established in 2003 to specifically focus on the 2005 bid. There are also contributions from the British Olympic Association, London International Sport, the London Development Agency, the London Olympic Institute and the Olympic Legacy Integration Group.
The earliest dated record in LOC 7 dates from 1993 and was created by London International Sport which had been involved in the earlier bids for Birmingham and Manchester as proposed Olympic venue sites. A lot of this information on these unsuccessful bids were used as lessons learnt to contribute to the successful London 2012 bid.
London 2012 was the successful bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics. The British Olympic Association had started work on the bid in 1997 and presented its report to government ministers in December 2000.
There had previously been three consecutive unsuccessful UK bids to host the summer Olympic Games (Birmingham in 1992 and Manchester for 1996 and 2000). London was chosen for the bid in 2005 as the most likely successful candidate for a UK city that the International Olympic Committee would deem an acceptable candidate in competition with other world cities in a competitive bidding process. On 6 July 2005 at its 117th session in Singapore, the IOC awarded London the right to host the Games of the XXX Olympiad. London beat the favourite, Paris, by 54 to 50 points on the fourth and final ballot. London was the first city to host the Olympiad three times.
Following the success of the bid, the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) was established to oversee the ongoing developments of the games. Some alterations were made after the bid was accepted, including the decision by the IOC to eliminate some sportiung events and a new layout for the Olympic Zone, both resulting in some relatively minor changes to the Olympic venues.
