Administrative / biographical background:

Before 1967, aid to Malaysia and Singapore was dealt with by the East Asia Department. In that year a Malaysia and Singapore Department was formed and an MS file series raised for its records. The Department was succeeded by a Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and East Asia Department in 1970. In 1971 that department was in turn absorbed into the Far East Department, which continued to use the MS file series.
