Administrative / biographical background:

Each warrant was a written authority given by a defendant, usually in an action for debt, to an attorney to concede the case to the plaintiff in return for a financial settlement. The series begins in 1802, when the court stipulated that the warrant should be filed with the clerk of the dockets and judgments.
