The series contains a total of about 4,500 returns for England and nearly 550 for Wales, showing the number of acres devoted to wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, peas, beans, turnips, rape, rye and other crops. Nottinghamshire is the only county totally unrepresented. |

| Administrative / biographical background: |
Prompted by high wartime grain prices and fears for the country's ability to feed itself, the Home Secretary in 1801 requested a survey of arable land in England and Wales by asking the bishops of the 26 dioceses to distribute forms to their parish clergy for completion. Since the farming community suspected that the information was required for tax or tithe assessments, they may have understated their true acreage. |
