Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre was renamed the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and established as an executive agency of the Department of Transport on 2 April 1990.

It is responsible for the registration and licensing of drivers in Great Britain, the registration and licensing of vehicles, together with the collection and enforcement of vehicle excise duty in the United Kingdom.

It was originally organised on the basis of separate Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration and Licensing Divisions supported by Management Services and Strategic Planning Divisions.

From April 1993 the organisation was restructured into three executive groups: operations, development and support.
