Catalogue description Chancery: Gascon Rolls

The documents in this series form the principal surviving record of the administration of Gascony under English rule.

The first four rolls consist of the enrolled letters patent and letters close of Edward, son of Henry III, as duke of Aquitaine and lord of Ireland; some entries relate to Ireland, but most refer to Gascony.

The later rolls, from 1273-4, contain treaties, truces, appointments and powers of ambassadors, orders, summons to military service, letters of safe-conduct and protection, and grants of offices and lands relating to Gascony under English rule. Until early in the reign of Edward II, there are also entries relating to Ponthieu and Montreuil.

All of the rolls from 1317-1468 have been translated in searchable English calendar on the The Gascon Rolls Project website, where researchers can also access digital images of the records and research content. The completion of the online calendar, undertaken by Professor Anne Curry of the University of Southampton and Dr Guilhem Pepin of the Université de Bordeaux in 2018-19, has been generously supported by the Friends of The National Archives.
