Alan NUNN MAY: British. Alan NUNN MAY was a physicist and member of the British team working on the atomic energy project in Canada between 1943 and 1945. In the latter year he was identified as a GRU agent by the defector GOUZENKO. On his return to Britain NUNN MAY was confronted, confessed to spying, was convicted under the OSA and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Although he admitted his espionage, he never gave details of how he had been recruited nor identified others involved. This file summarises GOUZENKO's disclosures and includes accounts of NUNN MAY's confession and subsequent interrogations, the nature of the information he passed to the Russians, his motivation in doing so, his prison history and efforts by the Security Service and other Government departments to find employment for him following his release from prison |
