  • J 1131873-1897Supreme Court of Judicature: Office of the Master of the Rolls: Jessel and Esher Letter Books

This series consists mainly of entry books of out-letters of Sir George Jessel as master of the rolls from 1873 until 1883; there is also one volume of his successor in that office, Sir Reginald Baliol Brett, later Lord Esher, covering the years 1886 to 1897. A few in-letters and loose papers are also included. The entry books relate mainly to the irregularity of approaches to judges out of court but salaries, appointments and procedure within the courts are also discussed. There are also some letters concerning Patent Office, Petty Bag Office and Public Record Office matters. Each volume contains an index of topics and correspondence in chronological order.
