HCA 311664-1815High Court of Admiralty: Prize Court: Monitions Files and Bundles
This series comprises files and bundles of monitions concerning the Prize Court of the High Court of Admiralty. A monition, in civil law, is a process in the nature of a summons.
These files and bundles of monitions were directed to the Marshal of the High Court of Admiralty, giving notice of the seizure of a ship as a prize and warning all persons interested to appear before the Court within a fixed period to show cause why the ship should not be condemned as lawful prize. They were displayed in a public place, being usually affixed to one of the pillars of the Royal Exchange in the City of London. The documents are the original ones which were issued by the court and returned bearing endorsements of due execution.
