The documents drawn together under the heading of Accounts Various, Army, Navy and Ordnance are aggregated by the type of expenditure to which they relate. Most are accounts for particular purposes, limited by time, date and circumstance. They document expenditure on the king's wars in Scotland, Ireland and Wales and overseas, particularly in France. They record the expenses in both men and materials, including victualling, ordnance, and ships. From the reign of Henry VIII they include certificates of musters, with related documents.
The series also includes indentures for war, ranging in date from the reign of Edward I to that of Henry VIII; and expenses of the custody of prisoners, including King John of France and David Bruce, King of Scotland, under Edward III, and Charles, Duke of Orleans, under Henry V and Henry VI.
