E 132c1272-c1625Exchequer: King's Remembrancer: Transcripts of Deeds and Charters
This series consists of rolls, files and single membranes containing transcripts of charters, deeds and related documents. While the instruments transcribed range from a 14th-century copy of a grant by Offa, King of Mercia, in 781 to a copy of a lease of manorial mills dating to 1590-1, most date to the 13th and 14th centuries and relate to possessions of religious houses and private individuals alike.
The original purpose of many of the documents in this series is unclear. Some may relate to unfinished Quo Warranto proceedings of the 1280s. Many of the transcripts were presumably prepared by the religious houses themselves, some of them with illumination.
