Records of the Prison Commission and Home Office Prison Department (records otherwise in HO under Prison Department and Inspectorate division) concerning the management and staffing of prisons, and the records and treatment of prisoners.
Minutes of the Board of the Prison Commission, later Prison Board, are in PCOM 14 and precedent books are in PCOM 17.
Correspondence and papers of the Commission are in PCOM 7-PCOM 9. Treasury authorities for expenditure are in PCOM 13.
Printed proceedings of gaol delivery of the Central Criminal Court for London and the surrounding counties for the nineteenth century are in PCOM 1. Records of prisons relating to prisoners from the end of the eighteenth century are in PCOM 2. Copies of court orders for imprisonment and transportation and licences for convicts to be at large for the second half of the nineteenth century will be found in PCOM 3-PCOM 5, which are indexed in PCOM 6.
