This series contains records of the North and East African Department of the Foreign Office dealing with UK relations with Algeria, Ethiopia, French Somaliland, Libya, Morocco, Somalia, the Sudan, Tunisia, the United Arab Republic and Spanish North Africa between January 1967 and October 1968. From October 1968 the records are of the North African Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, dealing with UK relations with Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia and the United Arab Republic (which reverted to its former name Egypt in September 1971), and Spanish North Africa.
In April 1972 the North African Department was merged with elements of the Near Eastern Department to form the Near East and North Africa Department, and from April to December 1972 the records are those produced by the new department dealing with Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia. Records relating to the Near East continued to use the NE series of the old Near Eastern Department until the end of the year (FCO 17).
