ZOS 31932-1950Ordnance Survey of Great Britain: War of 1939-1945: Military Grids
This series consists of several series of Geographical Section, General Staff (GSGS) maps showing the military grids used before and during the Second World War overprinted on Ordnance Survey maps. Military grid were similar in form to the National Grid but followed a different (and, for the duration of the War, secret) numeration. These are the grid references commonly cited in operational record books, war diaries and other operational records of the period. The War Revision Military Grid was overprinted in purple (which is why the term 'Purple Grid' is often applied to military grids) and the Second War Revision in black. The Ordnance Survey base maps are:
GSGS 3907: England and Wales one-inch 5th edition
GSGS 3908 Scotland one-inch 5th edition
GSGS 3957: England and Wales quarter-inch
GSGS 3958: Scotland quarter-inch
GSGS 3993: Great Britain one inch to ten miles
The material in this series is non record material originally held in the Library.
