This series includes royal sign-manual warrants countersigned by the Secretary-at-War, or copies thereof, authorizing the establishments of the various regiments both of the Regular Army and the Militia and also of the military forces in the colonies. They set out the numbers of each rank, the pay for the period covered and the estimated cost of wagons, forage, provisions, etc. The series has been very largely made up of transfers from the Treasury and the Audit Office.
It includes, in addition, the establishments for half pay, the compassionate list, and pensions to officers' widows, giving the names in each case. To them have been added a number of establishments of the Army and of individual forces, and the papers of various committees concerned therewith.
