Records of the Judicial Committee of the Privy CouncilPCAP 21833-1878Judicial Committee of the Privy Council: Appeals Assignation Books
Appeals assignation books recording the proceedings of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council itself and preliminary hearings before the Court of Surrogates. They give names of parties, proctors, dates of appearance, nature of the case, date of the filing of the printed cases, and some final reports of the committee which constituted formal judgments. Some post 1842 volumes have a table of progress of the case.
Most of the appeals are maritime or ecclesiastical in nature and there are no references to appeals from colonial courts. Despite the 1857 act which transferred appeal jurisdiction to the House of Lords in testamentary cases, the books indicate that appeals of this kind continued to be heard by the Judicial Committee.
