- At the instigation of the Secretary of State for Defence Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools (HMI) inspect and report on:
- Ministry of Defence schools for the children of service personnel abroad; the current title of the operating authority is the Service Children's Education Authority, which provides approximately 110 schools worldwide, mainly for children of primary school age, of which the majority are in Germany (for the British Army of the Rhine);
- the education of "Junior Soldiers" at entry depots in the United Kingdom: as part of their initial training, soldiers of 16 and 17 receive education in English, Mathematics, General Studies and First Aid, and also physical education, welfare provision and the non-military aspects of trade training; and
- the education and training of prospective junior and senior non-commissioned officers.
